An air handling unit is a central air conditioning station that handles the air distributed throughout a building. Understanding how AHUs work, their components, and their role in HVAC systems is fundamental knowledge for building engineers.

    Overview

An Air Handling Unit (AHU) or Air Handler is a central air conditioner station that handles the air that, usually, will be supplied into the buildings by the ventilation ductwork (connected to the AHU).

Handling the air means that the air will be delivered into the building spaces with thermo-hygrometric and IAQ (Indoor Air Quality) treatment. The accuracy of the treatment will depend on the specificity of each project (offices, schools, laboratories, factories with industrial processes, etc.). It means, the Air Handling Unit treats the air by filtering, cooling and/or heating, humidifying and/or dehumidifying.

Heating, ventilating and air-conditioning systems installed at industrial places have air handling unit or AHU as an important device. These units are vital to handle and condition the air according to the desired needs. An air handler typically contains a fan, heating coils, cooling coils, a filter section, sound attenuators, dampers, actuators and controls, depending on the particular design.

Air handling units and its important components:

    Blower

The blower is the most important component in every air handling unit which performs the function of recycling the air present in the building. The air collected by the blower is conditioned (warmed or cooled) and then released back into the building through ducts. It is either cooled or heated according to the different requirements.

    Humidifier

One of the most essential components in air handling unit is humidifiers. They perform the function of maintaining the quality of air in cold climate areas. In the absence of these components, the air may become extremely dry due to constant heating. Different types of humidifiers, including vaporizers and ultrasonic humidifiers are present in different units.

    Filter

Air handling units are fitted with filters that perform the function of removing dust and other undesirable components of air to make it clean and fresh. Filters are vital to conditioning the atmosphere.

    Conditioning elements

There are different conditionings elements present in different types of air handling units. Sound attenuators and vibration isolators are other important components that control the noise and vibrations produced by an air handling unit.
